Family History
The building that today houses the Hotel de Su Merced has belonged to the same family for five generations, since Don Germán Zelada Chavarría acquired it for his daughter, Honorata Zelada Valda. Over the years, the house has undergone various modifications according to the needs of the families who lived there.
In 1995, when the house showed signs of deterioration, Juan Luis Gantier, son of the owners Luis Gantier and María Luisa Zelada, proposed converting it into a hotel. Together with his parents and his wife, María del Carmen Darwich, they formed a family partnership that allowed them to combine skills and experiences to develop the hotel.
María Luisa Zelada's objective was to show the customs of Sucre, so they incorporated old family furniture and others acquired or rescued from different places in the city. These restored pieces now form part of the hotel's authentic furniture, some with documented histories and genealogies.
The hotel was inaugurated in 1997, coinciding with the Summit of Presidents of the Andean Pact, where it received the first guests, including the President of Bolivia. Since then, the Hotel de Su Merced continues to be a reference in Sucre, continually improving its facilities and serving as inspiration for other similar establishments in the city.
This summary maintains the essence of the original story, highlighting key aspects of the family legacy and the unique character of the hotel.
