Four days of culture, music, and celebration in the Bolivian capital.
The city of Sucre is preparing for a true "British invasion" from March 12 to 15, with a series of cultural, academic, and recreational activities organized by the British Embassy in Bolivia. This event, known as "British Week Sucre," is part of the commemoration of 185 years of bilateral relations between Bolivia and the United Kingdom, and also coincides with the celebrations of the Bicentennial of the founding of Bolivia.
Richard Porter, British Ambassador to Bolivia, along with Damián Condori, Governor of Chuquisaca, presented this initiative, which seeks to strengthen cultural ties between the two nations and decentralize the Embassy's activities, extending them to different regions of the country.
First edition in the historic city
"This is the first time we're holding an event as the British Embassy in Sucre, not only for the Bicentennial but also because we're celebrating 185 years of diplomatic relations between Bolivia and the United Kingdom," explained Déborah Villarreal, the Embassy's Events and Corporate Services Officer, in a statement to Correo del Sur Radio.
The official added that they have decided to "literally 'invade' Sucre with a series of different activities: cultural, academic, and recreational, such as the Battle of the Bands."
"Battle of the Bands": Bolivian talent performing British rock
One of the highlights will be the "Battle of the Bands: British Invasion," a music competition that encourages Bolivian talent to present their own versions of British rock classics. The finalists will perform live on Friday, March 14th at Papa George's, and the winning band will receive a $500 prize and perform at the event's closing ceremony on Saturday, March 15th at Plaza 25 de Mayo.
According to Villarreal, "several applications of the highest quality have been received," which promises a high-quality show for attendees.
Activities for all tastes
The program includes activities for various audiences and interests:
- Inauguration and Tribute : The official inauguration will take place on Wednesday the 12th at the Casa de la Libertad, with a tribute to the independence heroine Juana Azurduy de Padilla, followed by the inauguration of the Plaza Gran Bretaña.
- Film and Food : The "British Film Gala Night" will feature British short films on human rights and the environment, accompanied by a cocktail featuring traditional British cuisine.
- Education and the Environment : Chevening Scholarships will be presented, and a forum on climate and the environment will be held with the participation of organizations such as WWF and WCS.
- Inclusion : The Pride and Union event will provide a safe space for celebration for the LGBTQ+ community.
- Business : A meeting between British and Bolivian companies will seek to foster opportunities for collaboration.
- Culture : A Quechua adaptation of "Hamlet" will be presented, with a script adapted to the Andean worldview.
Why should a Briton visit Sucre?
As part of the activities, the British Embassy has launched a social media contest asking the question "Why should a Briton visit Sucre?" Participants must post an Instagram story with photos or videos of a special corner of the city, tagging @UKinBolivia and using the hashtag #BritishWeekSucre. The winner will receive a prize of 1,000 bolivianos.
This initiative seeks to promote Sucre as an international tourist destination, taking advantage of the visibility offered by British Week.
Practical information
All activities are open to the public and admission is free, with the exception of the "British Film Gala Night" on Wednesday the 12th, which requires an invitation. The event will close on Saturday, March 15th, in Plaza 25 de Mayo, with a musical performance in front of the historic Sucre Government building by the Gustavo Orihuela Quartet.
